Our long-term goal is to convey an appreciation of one of the grand scientific challenges of the new century—the search for an understanding of emergence across many disciplines, or an understanding of the emergent universe. By the year 2007 we will have developed materials to explain emergence due to the interaction of quantum particles in our debut project: Quantum Matter (link to text below).. By the year 2010, the project will encompass the following systems of emergence, which collectively we call the "emergent universe":
| 1. Quantum Matter | (atoms in a crystal, electrons in a superconductor) |
| 2. Soft Matter | (the stacking and flow of ball bearings) |
| 3. Living Things | (ant colonies, evolution, neural networks) |
| 4. Social and Economic Behavior | (cities, traffic, economies) |
We plan to communicate principles of emergence using a variety of communication tools such as an interactive Web site, film, radio, books and articles, art, exhibits, and installations.
