Project Goals (p.2 of 3)

We are on the edge of a new era -- The Age of Emergence – that is changing the thrust of much of modern scientific research. It’s important for the public to be aware of this quest to understand the fundamental nature of the universe. Research in emergence is critical to understanding a wide range of phenomena in fields as disparate as physics, materials science, chemistry, and biology, and research findings may lead to results applicable to communication networks, social behavior, economics, and biomedicine.

Our fundamental messages to the public are these:

• We can rarely understand the behaviors of complex systems through an understanding of their parts. Individual components interact with each other and the environment to result in new behaviors.

• The same emergent principles are seen in diverse fields such as physics, biology, chemistry, information sciences, and engineering, as well as in the social, behavioral, and economic sciences.

• Modern research is collaborative and multidisciplinary; researchers in diverse fields work together to develop and interpret science.
