Film and radio
The Sloan Foundation is funding phase one of an hour-long NOVA-like feature
on John Bardeen and the BCS theory. Science documentary filmmaker Linda
Feferman is currently working on research, development, and scripting
for the film. We will also seek support for a series of film clips in
which leading physicists explain core concepts, and for a series of brief
radio sound-bites.
Superconductivity! Web site
The Superconductivity! Web site will serve as a prototype for the larger
Emergent Universe Web site. It will explain the core concepts in superconductivity
and include a bank of lectures, papers, and film interviews with leaders
in superconductivity.
Prototype Moveable Feast
We have begun to develop a Moveable Feast focusing on superconductivity
for the Spring 2006 Material Research Society (MRS) meeting in San Francisco.
We will collaborate with Bay Area physicists and materials scientists
and the Exploratorium staff to develop posters, film clips, and Internet
kiosks on quantum matter and the EMP for the meeting hall. In addition,
we will help organize an evening program that combines popular lectures
with interpretive scientific musical, dance, or comedy performances.
Physics corridor installations
We propose to work wtih the physics and biological sciences departments
of several universities to develop a series of "corridor exhibits"
that will introduce undergraduate factulty to some of the phenomena that
are considered emergent. Graduate students would work with undergraduates
at each universiy to develop exhibits or parts of exhibits. These corridor
installations can be used as pilots for components that might be used
in large traveling exhibitions designed for public audiences.
High school student investigations: SuperNet
We will create materials for teaching high school students fundamental
physics through their participation in inquiry-oriented investigations
and data analysis. The topics of these investigations will come from superconductivity
and magnetism. The classroom materials on superconductivity will be linked
with the historic anniversary of the BCS theory in 2007 and will conform
to the National Science Standards. SuperNet is based upon the model of
QuarkNet, supported by FermiLab..
Radio, books, and articles
We’re contacting leading science writers and journalists to publicize
the fiftieth anniversary of the BCS theory. To help commemorate this historical
and momentous contribution to science, we’re encouraging radio stories,
newspaper and magazine articles, and books on quantum emergence and superconductivity.
