Projects > Emerging explanations

In 2006–2007, the EUP team will investigate strategies to make the principles of emergence comprehensible to the science-attentive public, with a focus on quantum matter.

• What specific examples of emergence serve as the best “hooks” to entice the learner?

• What are the best visual and verbal descriptions that make the basic concepts underlying these examples accessible to a general audience?

• What is the best way to present both the whole and the parts so that emergent properties are apparent?

During the EUP planning period, our professional evaluators will review research on the public’s knowledge, understanding, and attitudes on core concepts in magnetism, superconductivity, and emergence. We will then assemble and test various analogies and metaphors, visual images, 3-D models and animations, and clear explanations.
