Current and Planned Projects of the EUP

The primary goal of this project is to articulate the paradigmatic shift that is currently being realized by studies in emergence, beginning with a focus on the quantum. Our short-term goal is to explain emergence in quantum matter—the interaction of quantum particles to produce new states of matter such as Bose Einstein condensates, superfluidity, superconductivity, and magnetism. The completion of this phase of the project will coincide with the fiftieth anniversary in 2007 of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BSC) theory of superconductivity. By 2010, we will have an extensive educational Web site on the emergent universe that addresses emergence across many disciplines and size scales, from physics to psychology, and from electrons to human culture.

Because people learn in different ways, and different audiences can be reached in different settings, the EUP will use a variety of outreach approaches. Our six-pronged communication plan is as follows:

  • Interactive educational Web sites
  • Exhibits and installations
  • Film and video
  • Radio, books, and articles
  • High school student outreach
  • College campus outreach (Moveable Feast)

This six-pronged approach is exemplified in our first constellation of projects, Superconductivity!
